The Three Treasures: Essence, Energy and Spirit (Jing, Qi, Shen)

For thousands of years, traditional Chinese medicine has taught and lived by the “Three Treasures” theory, a philosophy that states that there are three essential elements to sustain human life. These elements are Qi (energy), Shen (spirit) and Jing (essence).

Each division or branch of Chinese Medicine aims to regulate and nourish the Three Treasures as a basis for balancing energy throughout the body. When Qi, Shen and Jing are balanced and strong, we have the highest level of emotional, mental and physical strength. In this space of balance and strength, we become more adaptable, have greater immunity, and all aspects of life become lighter. Jing, which translates as “essence,” is the most fundamental aspect of our energy. Jing is the basis of the other two elements. Our Jing is inherited from our parents and guides us as we develop, grow and reproduce. To strengthen our Jing, we must pay attention to the foods we eat. Chinese medicine views Jing as our reserve fuel and energy bank: when our Qi is low, we rely on Jing to get us through. Jing is depleted when we work too much, use stimulants, or have a chronic illness.

Think of Jing as a source of energy that fuels your entire life, is difficult to restore, and is critical to our overall well-being.

Qi, which translates as “energy,” is our daily function and health. The key components for balanced Qi are simple, clean air and nutritious foods. Our Qi thrives and we are full of daily energy when our digestive and respiratory systems are strong. Think of Qi as gently flowing energy. Lack of fluency causes physical pain, mood swings, and mental confusion. The most common Qi blockage is daily stress. Last but not least, Shen! Shen translates as “spirit”; Our Shen is made of emotions, intelligence, way of thinking and spirituality. Spiritual energy connects us with the universe and acts as an anchor for the body. When our Shen is strong, we feel at peace and our wisdom shines. On the other hand, a weak Shen provides a platform for anxiety, depression, distractibility, and other serious mental and emotional conditions. We can strengthen our Shen by cultivating relationships and valuing things like growth, love, and tolerance. A strong Shen gives us purpose and guides us in the pursuit of our destiny.

In modern times, following the Three Treasures theory is a great way to evaluate yourself and live your best life.

Summer and joy

To remember… Joy is the emotion of the Heart, in fact: in summer you are more inclined to be happy, you sleep less without suffering and you fully live all the experiences that come, with a smile. Summer is the awakening of the Emperor, who in Chinese Medicine identifies the energetic meridian of the Heart. In June, the Heart prepares the body to face the summer: in this month the sweating engines are turned on, so important for maintaining the body’s homeostasis during the hottest hours of the day. It is said: sweat is the liquid of the Heart

The Heart is the seat of the Shen, a word that can be translated as spirit. In the month of June, each individual’s own energy body is released, laying the foundations to absorb life with more enthusiasm during the summer months.

Personality is located in the Heart and its hardening leads to the famous panic attacks, in which the Heart is usually involved with an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. This is also due to the feeling of loss of control, which completely empties the energy of the Liver and causes excess energy to flow to the Heart. In June you have to start paying attention to excessive heat. Those who suffer from heart disease or have problems in the circulatory system should lay a solid foundation this month to better face the upcoming summer season.

So it’s good: establish a clear and sustainable routine to get enough hydration;

start avoiding the sun during the hottest hours, observing the effect it has on your body; eat more fruits and vegetables, which contain water and fiber, which nourish without overloading digestion; reduces the consumption of fats and heavy foods; of the season which, naturally, requires going to bed a little later and getting up a little earlier than usual.
